Kyle Bros was established in Kelso in 1945 by Robert W. Kyle,
who was born in Lanton, near Jedburgh in 1905.
Robert gained mechanical experence working with Rolls Royce in Glasgow
and building areoplane engines in Hendon, London, before embarking
on his new venture operting private hire cars from Kelso square.
Within a year, Robert purchased the long established Carriage Master business of William Service, Crawford Street, Kelso, where he was joined after a short time by his two brothers, Ian and John Kyle.
This brought Kyle Bros in to all areas of transport including hiring hearses
to the local Joiner / Undertakers in the area. The company quickly purchased buses / coaches for school contracts, rugby clubs and private functions and provided wedding cars to many local couples over the years
By the eary 1950's, Robert's son, Alan Kyle came in to the business
followed by Dave Irvine, husband of Irene Kyle in1955.
Kyle Bros under the partnership of Alan and Dave continued to prosper
and they added many added facets to the business: - Funeral Arranging & Directing, Vehicle Steam Cleaning, Dewaxing and Rustproofing and Driving Instruction to learners. Vehicle maintanence was done in house firstly at their workshop at Spylaw Road thereafter at Bowmont Street. Their work continued until their retirements in 1993 / 1996 respectively.
Robert and David Irvine, grandson's of the original founder, Robert Kyle
started at Kyle Bros in 1989. Julie Riding (nee Irvine) the founder's grandaughter and Lizzie Riding (Great-grandaughter) also work
as part of the team at Kyle Bros on a daily basis.
We are joined in our team by Cathy Ross (Funeral Arranger), Dod Butler (Funeral Director) and Donald Ross (Funeral Director) along with Tom Guthrie, George Turnbull and Andrew Brunton helping where they can.
In 1994 the company moved premises to Maxwellheugh, Kelso,
to updated premises where we are still based today.
